It was a balmy, beautiful night at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA. Lots of Beatle shirts among the crowd, even a few Liverpool 8 jerseys. So it's 7:30 p.m. and the scheduled time for the show to start. Out walks an announcer and introduces ... a comedian? That's right. The Mountain Winery show hopefully marked the first and last time a guy telling Costco jokes opens for Ringo Starr and the 10th edition of the All-Starr Band. (For the record, the comic was Dan St. Paul. His jokes included a few racial tinges ... surprising for a show that children were attending. According to St. Paul's website, this was his only scheduled date opening for Ringo. A spokesman for the Winery told us they thought he was touring with Ringo, but Ringo's publicist confirmed the opening act was the venue's idea. "We don't have opening acts," they told us.)
To say this was embarrassing was putting it mildly. Especially since the guy couldn't even get the date of the Beatles' final show at nearby Candlestick Park (about an hour away) in his opening joke, saying it was September, 1965.
Fortunately, this didn't last very long and out came the band. Here's the complete setlist:
- With a Little Help From My Friends (intro for Ringo)
- It Don't Come Easy
- What Goes On
- Memphis In Your Mind
- Lonely Is the Night (Squier)
- Free Ride (Winter)
- Down Under (Hay)
- Dream Weaver (Wright)
- Boys
- Pick Up the Pieces (Stuart)
- Liverpool 8
- Act Naturally
- Yellow Submarine
- Frankenstein (Winter)
- Band intros
- Never Without You
- Choose Love
- The Stroke (Squire)
- Work To Do (Stuart)
- I Wanna Be Your Man
- Love Is Alive (Wright)
- Who Can It Be Now (Hay)

- With a Little Help From My Friends/Give Peace a Chance
Ringo was very relaxed all night, waving often to the crowd and joking with them. At one point, a concert goer yelled out, "Goo goo ga joob." Without missing a beat, Ringo answered, "Goo goo ga joob. Yeah, you're the walrus." There were several people with Liverpool 8 jerseys that he made a point to notice.
There were a couple of new Ringo songs in the set, but it looks like they came at the expense of "Oh My My," which wasn't included. Too bad. "Choose Love" was a poor substitute.
Ringo seems to have picked up from Paul that paying tribute to the Beatles who have passed on is a good idea. He dedicated "Never Without You" to George, and ended with "Give Peace a Chance." After Gary Wright told the story of how George Harrison gave him a book that inspired the song "Dream Weaver," Ringo joked, "I'd like to point out that George Harrison never gave me no damn book." In the introduction to "Never Without You," Ringo said, "I will always love the man." The band took a while to loosen up, but they started to at "Pick Up the Pieces" and it seemed to really kick in on "Frankenstein." They work very well together. The non-Ringo songs the crowd reacted most strongly to were "Lonely Is the Night," the Colin Hay songs, "Love Is Alive" and, of course, "Frankenstein." Billy was very energetic during "Lonely Is the Night" and is a spark for the band. Edgar Winter is a great showman (how can't he be with the long white hair?) and really gives it his all during "Frankenstein." Hamish Stuart does a great Sean Connery impersonation. Seriously, it's good to see him get an expanded role in the band. His "Pick Up the Pieces" was a real highlight. As we recall, in his earlier stint, he wasn't featured at all.
The Mountain Winery venue is in the middle of construction. This came into play when Ringo came back a little late from an offstage break, saying, "I got carried away looking at the blueprints of the new building."
Colin Hay got a bit mixed up in his introduction to "Who Can It Be Now" saying the band was playing in Calistoga, not Saratoga. He then realized his mistake and said, "Sorry. I got my waters mixed up."
Gregg Bissonette, who Ringo said, "we picked up on the highway," was a very good choice as second drummer. Ringo's style meshes very well with his and the two complement each other nicely. We did, however, miss the percussion solo that Ringo and Sheila E. did. In fact, we missed Sheila E. quite a bit. She was a lot of fun and added a lot to the group.
The souvenirs included coffee cups ($15-$20), t-shirts, sweat shirts, tote bags and programs ($20).
Here's a suggestion for Ringo: For a future All-Starr band, how about trying another group of American rockers, maybe guys from '60s era Top 40s bands.
Update (7/19/08)
Hey Steve,I didn't see anything mentioned about these things in the review of Ringo's show at Prior Lake, Minnesota in a media link but they are kind of noteworthy! First of all, it was a GREAT show - don't know which one the reviewer was watching!? Edgar Winter and Billy Squier shine throughout. And the band was tight!
During Ringo's song "Choose Love", Billy played all three guitar passages from The Beatles' "The End" during his solo in the song! I thought that was a nice touch! Some playlist changes too! Billy did not play "In The Dark", instead Edgar played "Winter's Dream" on keyboard solo. And of course later, Edgar brought the house down with his incredible performance of "Frankenstein" which rivaled a Sheila E one man band performance! It should also be noted that Ringo did NOT sing "Oh My My" at this show!!! Unfortunately! The one bad moment occured when some idiot yelled out "Pete Best!" between songs when Ringo was talking. Ringo barked back "Shut up!" But I was too stunned from the comment to applaud. Mike Ray

I was at Westbury for Ringo's show too, and didn't see any mention of this in the reports sent in by the others, so I thought I would write. Ringo seemed to be moody at the show; maybe it was fatigue. I looked at the schedule and the band did something like six shows in eight days time, which would tire out anyone, and all these band members are in their fifties and sixties. Between his songs, Ringo came out with a mix of good natured jabs but also some heckling of audience members that evoked some audible gasps and "whoaaaa!"s from the crowd. When Ringo came back on stage after Edgar Winter's killer performance of "Frankenstein", he singled out one guy sitting in the front row, and started in on him about taping the show. It was difficult to see as the theatre is in the round, but Ringo did literally stop the show for this. He said something about him (Ringo) not minding people taking the occasional photograph, that was okay by him, but said something about this guy taping the show and trying to hide it. He also said something about how he was not going to stand for it; by this time security had approached the guy, and proceeded to escort him out of the theatre. It appeared that he was a fan because he had a t-shirt on from a past tour. Ringo noticed that as the guy was walking up the aisle and he said that the guy had his t-shirt, but had no manners. The show went on after that without any interruptions. I thought the show was excellent by the way! Thanks for a great site, I check it often!
Update (7/2/08)
Ringo Starr and the All Starr Band
Capital One Theatre
Westbury, NY
Sunday, June 29, 2008 We had the radio on as we approached New York. It was Gay Pride Day in New York. They said there were 500,000 people in the parade and 1 million spectators. Governor Patterson was going to be the first New York Governor to participate in a pride parade. Apparently he had cataract surgery on Friday and his doctor told him he should not be out so soon. Governor Patterson said he wanted to be there to show his support for equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian people! The show was sold out and there were quite a few people in front of the theatre trying to purchase tickets. This was the 13th Ringo and the All Starrs show I have seen. I have seen at least one show on each of his 10 All Starr tours. I also saw him with the Roundheads at Irving Plaza, with George at the Concert for Bangla Desh, and with The Beatles at Shea in 1965 and 1966. I bought two t-shirts ($40 each) and a program ($20). One of the t-shirts is black with a black and white photo of Ringo making the peace sign with both hands. Underneath in big letters it says Ringo with the peace symbol replacing the o. We found our seats. We were all sitting separately. Paul and I were in the very last row of our section, although there were a couple of places in the theater were there were 3 more rows behind where we were. Still, they were decent seats and not far from the stage. There are seats at Radio City and certainly at PNC that are probably no more than a third of the way back from the stage that are further away from the stage than we were. The audience was almost entirely baby boomers, although there were a few younger children scattered among them. There was a young boy sitting in front of me and I enjoyed watching his enthusiastic response to the show. The show started a little late. I had purposely not read the reviews and commentary about previous shows and I was glad I hadn't. I was surprised at the band members and the set list. The All Starrs are Greg Bissonette, Colin Hay (from Men at Work), Billy Squires, Hamish Stuart, Edgar Winter, Gary Wright. Bissonette has played with a number of well known musicians and appeared on Santana's Supernatural. Along with his brother, Matt, he was in Ringo's band at the Irving Plaza show in New York and the Genesse Theater Show in Waukegan, IL in 2005. It was Colin Hay's birthday. I enjoyed his work with Men at Work and really like some of his solo material and he was my favorite in this version of the All Starrs. Billy Squires was my least favorite member of this year's band. I didn't care for any of his material. I was delighted that Hamish Stuart was back with the All Starrs and very pleased that he was one of the performers. His solo performance of Leon Russell's A Song For You was one of the highlights of the evening. Hamish looks great! The All Starrs format works well because it showcases artists that I wouldn't pay any attention to otherwise. Edgar Winter was the surprise in this version of the All Starrs. Free Ride and Frankenstein were two crowd favorites. Winter was struggling a bit with the vocals on Free Ride. I had not remembered that Gary Wright was participating in this tour. He had worked with both George and Ringo on All Things Must Pass. He is truly a one-hit wonder, but I love Dream Weaver. He said that George took him to India to study spirituality and that Dream weaver was inspired by something he read while he was there. The vocals were shaky, but I enjoyed seeing him. Ringo was dressed in a black shirt with sparkles, black slacks, and black and white sneakers. He looks fabulous. Very lithe. It is so wonderful to have an opportunity to see him in person and hear him sing Yellow Submarine and With A Little Help From My Friends. I am pleased that he is performing songs from his recent CDs. And I was delighted to hear Oh My My. The biggest surprise and the nicest touch was Give Peace A Chance. There were a lot of people taking photos throughout the show and Ringo indicated that he really didn't mind but about halfway through the show he turned towards one of the people and complained that the person was filming throughout the show. Clearly he had carried things too far. The strangest behavior I observed took place in the row in front of me. Two people came in more than half way through the show and sat down. I don't know if they knew the people sitting next to them but the man leaned over said, I'd like to say you didn't miss anything but it would be a lie. The people sat through three or four songs and then left. It was their loss. It was a decent audience. They were pretty responsive to the show. As they should have been. I would enjoy a show with just Ringo and a backup band but Ringo seems comfortable with the All Starr format and it works. I've enjoyed shows where I was a fan of all of the individual All Starrs, and I've enjoyed shows like this where I haven't been a fan of most of the participants. I am delighted that Ringo is still touring and thrilled every time I have an opportunity to see him.

Q: Were you close to Neil? Did you talk a lot? A: Yeah, sure. I spoke to him a few times in New York, I spoke to Suzie. It was really fast and it was really far out, because he was with us all in June in Vegas — Paul and I, and Yoko and Olivia — and there was no hint of it then. And then suddenly I got a call saying he was ill.
Hello Steve,My wife and I just got back from Atlantic City. Fantastic show! Excellent band, I think Colin and Edgar got the loudest and biggest response from the audience after they played Frankenstein and Who Can It Be Now?, respectively. Ringo was very chatty with the audience and with a couple of excited people yelling back up to him. The band seemed very relaxed and pumped. I thought Billy Squire's guitar work was awesome. The whole band was smoking. I don't think it was sold out, as we saw some empty seats. We enjoyed seeing some of Ringo's artwork on display there as well. I recommend to anyone to go see this show! I'd love to go again. Cheers Flemming Carlson
I was sitting in the 6th row near the center at the Holmdel show. I thought it odd that each performer moved down center for his song (and was given a new mic and stand) instead of singing from their regular positions as on all previous tours. Then I noticed something never present at a Ringo show before - a teleprompter. There was only one center stage, and he relied on it heavily for "Oh My My" and "Never Without You." In spite of that, he still messed up the lyrics to "It Don't Come Easy," "Liverpool 8" and "Photograph." The pacing of the show has slowed the last two tours, with longer introductions and no real rush to start the next song.
Update (6/30/08)
Hello Steve, I've been enjoying your site on a daily basis for years now - thanks for all you do. I thought I'd offer my perspective on the Holmdel, NJ PNC Bank Arts Center show. I attended with my wife and my two daughters aged 12 & 10. I'm a life long fan (44 years old) and my family has followed suit so we were all tremendously excited about the show. Obviously the show was a blast, both kids claiming it to be the best day of their lives! The highlights were certainly singing along with the Beatles' songs. In particular during "With A Little Help From My Friends" I had that moment where it "hit me", here we are singing this song with Ringo. It made feel like I'll never look at that song the same way again (in a good way). What was most unexpected was our reaction to Edgar Winter. I don't have any of his albums and like a lot of people I'm most familiar with his hits "Free Ride" and "Frankenstein" (both of which were played) but holy smoke! I had no idea what a presence the guy has. After he finished "Frankenstein" (easily the non-Ringo highlight of the evening) my 12 year old (who's probably barely heard the song before) turned to me with a stunned look and said "that was awesome!" After seeing him perform it was clear why the man is a musical legend. Anyway as you've heard a really good crowd, good vibes all around from the stage and the audience. The only letdown was when it had to end! Thanks for you time and thanks again for your efforts,
Dan S.
Notes from PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on Friday, June 27, 2008:
- RS introduced "What Goes On" as a song "I wrote in...1822!"
- At one point in the show, though I couldn't tell you right now when in the show it was, he started to sing "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer!"
- He got the words wrong in "Liverpool 8" and "Photograph." A fan had a Liverpool flag up front and he came to the edge of the stage to take it. He wrapped it around his shoulders and walked up and down then gave it back to her.
- Mentioned that every time he plays the Arts Center it rains. (Friday was no exception, though it held off until after the show started. However, there was a sizeable crowd on the lawn).
- Greeting some very young fans in the audience with "Hi little guy, I see you!" and "Little girl, I see you, hellloooo! " and "I see all the gorgeous girls, hellloooo!"
- RS made mention more than once what a great audience they were (My comment: Another place high on my list to see a show, though I was surprised more people were not up and dancing as they had been at past shows.) He made mention of one particular section that was particularly loud in his estimation. He said the crowd was so great, "I may move here if I can find a little 14 bedroom bungalow -- of course I'd have to have the band with me or I'd get lonely!"
- The band had really gelled by Boston, and sound mix had gotten better in Boston than it was in New York, but it sounded like they have gotten all the bugs worked out because they sounded excellent on Friday. High marks for this show.
Notes from Atlantic City, Taj Mahal show, June 28, 2008:
- Introduced "What Goes On" as the only song written by Starkey, Lennon and McCartney. "I know it's not that way on the record, but it's my show!"
- At one point he could not remember what the next song in the set list was and had to walk over to the list taped to the floor next to the monitor and go down the list to find out what was next!
- In introducing "Boys" both here and at the PNC the night before he said, "This is a song I used to do with my old band -- Rory Storm and the Hurricanes! And I did it with that other band I used to be in."
- The sound was excellent Saturday night, appeared to be no problems at all.
- Solos tonight were "Your Eyes" -- Gary Wright and "Overkill" -- Colin Hay
- Colin was pretty funny tonight. One joke: The longer you're in here, the less money you will lose in the casinos!" Other story he told before his solo, was that he got stopped speeding and the cop said, "I'm not going to give you a ticket, just slow down." Colin: "Oh, so you recognized me!" Cop: "Yeah, Flock of Seagulls, right? Colin (with big gritted teeth smile): "Yeah! That's right!" Cop: "I never forget a face!"
- For the second half of the show Ringo wore a ruffled shiny gold lame shirt. He indicated the shirt and said, "I really fell like it's an old style casino show" and mimed a greeting, "Hello, Frank, how ya doing?"
- The crowd had pockets of very enthusiastic fans at the front, but as is usual with the larger casino venues, there were high rollers in the front and not much dancing going on. One of my compatriots got shoved down into her seat by the shoulders by a very rude guy at the end of the show because she dared to get up and dance! The overall crowd was very enthusiastic and loud.
- Another great show!
Update (6/29/08)
Hey Steve -Cheers-
- No real "news" to report (no special guests, etc, same set list ...)
- Same show as Radio City, except solo spots were: - Edgar Winter "Dying To Live" - Hamish Stuart "A Song For You"
- Observationally (is that a word ?), OH MY MY sounded WAY better than just a couple of nights earlier.
- Place was not sold out, but real close (unofficially, 90-95% estimate)
- BUT - this was a REALLY enthusiastic crowd ..... Lots of standing O's, dancing, singing along, .... very "electric". Ringo played off it really well.

Some notes about the Boston show...The Boston audiences for Ringo's past shows there have been high energy, and last night was no exception. Most of the audience stood and danced the entire show. Ringo knows that too, saying, "Boston has always been good to the All Starrs". The added bonus for him is that he and wife Barbara have a lot of family living in the Boston area which he mentioned saying, "I have about 100 relatives in the audience." He also mentioned that Billy Squier is a local (Wellesley, MA). Indeed, Billy was wearing a Red Sox t-shirt. It was a hot dry day in Boston, and the venue is a semi permanent canopy right on the harbor. However, once down into the bowl of the venue, you don't really feel the breeze, and the heat and moisture from all those bodies tends to get trapped. Ringo commented that it had been such a beautiful dry, no humidity day (a rarity for it to be dry on such a warm day in New England) he and the band thought it would be great for the show, but he commented, "Here we're were thinking it's not so humid today, but boy!" as he mocked wiping his brow and shaking off the sweat. The show may not have been a sellout. There were little pockets of empty seats here and there, and there appeared to be a few rows at the back that were unoccupied. You would never know it by the loud, enthusiastic audience. After Gary's turn with "Dreamweaver" it was very quiet. A gal halfway back in the audience yelled, "I Love you Ringo" (he was up on his kit) and he said, "I love you too, babe! I may wear glasses, but the ears still work!" The set list is the same as New York RCMH, with the exception of the solo spots. When Ringo explained that they do featured solo spots in the middle of the show, he was laughing, "If they would just tell me who it is tonight! And as soon as they let me know I’ll let you know!" The crew was coming out with the electric piano and RS said, "Oh I guess I'm preventing them from..." as he stepped out of the way, and then said, "It must be Gary." The first solo spot was Gary Wright doing "Your Eyes" from his "First Signs of Life" cd, which was very well received. The second solo spot belonged to local boy Billy Squier, who did the acoustic version, of "In the Dark" as he had in New York (complete with the "cover of a cover" story). His lead in for “Act Naturally”, he asked if there were any cowboys in the audience (a couple of screams came in response) to which he replied, “Oh yeah, RIGHT, cowboys in BOSTON!” and went on to explain the song was so good there were three recorded versions: The one by Buck Owens, the one by him (i.e. the Beatles) and it was so good, a version by Buck and Ringo together. In introducing "Yellow Submarine" Ringo said, "If you don't know this song, you're in the wrong venue or you're here to see someone taller!" At a lull in the show someone yelled out “Happy Birthday Ringo!” He smiled and said, “This person is wishing me a happy birthday, but it’s not today. If it were today, I’d be looking for all the packages (mimes carrying a big stack of heavy packages).” Then he took time to explain his July 7, 12:00 noon “peace and love” campaign. After Billy's "The Stroke" and the enthusiastic response, Ringo quipped "Billy left Boston, but you still love him; he could have written 'Boston I left you, but you never let me down'”. Before "Photograph," Ringo spotted someone taking his picture with a small camera or cell phone, and heckled the guy saying, “You, in the white shirt taking that picture, how big will I be in that photo? Tiny! (pinching his fingers down). Like an Ant! ‘Oh that’s him!’ he pantomimes showing someone a photo on a view screen. And introduced the song with, “this one is about cameras.” At some point he complimented the audience again, saying “I don’t know how it is at the back there, but the dancing up here (indicates the immediate rows in front of the stage) is fabulous!” After “Oh My My” Ringo said, “If I had known when I was writing this song that I might be doing it live, I would have written less words” and said “it keeps going like a train.” In departing, Ringo made it a point to say more than once show great an audience Boston had been. What a great night (and oh, the Sox won their game too!).
Update (6/26/08)
Steve - Pretty consistent with previous shows in the early running so far, but a few notes / observations from last night - - same "core" set list, with solo spots this time by Colin Hay (Are You Looking At Me) and Billy Squier (In The Dark) - guest drummer on "With A Little Help From My Friends" was Levon Helm - no "Back Off Boogaloo" which only seems to be listed only on opening night. I wasn't there, but it seems weird that it'd be listed AFTER "With A Little Help From My Friends", which has closed every ASB show ... maybe it was a throw off, couple of lines ? - "Give Peace A Chance" is just a couple of runs through the chorus as Ringo leaves the stage and the band plays on. A nice touch, but kind of a "bookend" the way the "Billy Shears" excerpt opens the show, leading into "It Don't Come Easy" - speaking of impromptu lines, after Ringo introduced Billy, and Billy asked "did you call my name", Ringo broke into a couple of lines from "I Call Your Name" (but it doesn't make the cut on the set list :) Overall - the show was excellent. Ringo's drumming was really, really, really energetic throughout. And on the two Hamish Stuart / Average White Band songs he was really in a groove ("Pick Up The Pieces", by the way, was one of the absolute highlights of the show. "Work To Do" was equally good, but less familiar to most people there). Colin Hay and Edger Winter were fan favorites, and Gary Wright was an absolute delight (I was kind of hoping he'd have gotten one of the solo spots this night ....). Ringo's singing was fine, most notably on "Liverpool 8". That track sounded WAY better with a group of veterans than with the pickup band he took on the TV junket earlier in the year. And on the lesser known songs ("Never Without You" and "Memphis In Your Mind") it sounded better than on the last tour and even on the "Soundstage" album with the Roundheads. the same could be said of "Boys", which sounded sluggish on the TV junket. "Oh My My" was obviously a treat to hear live, but was kind of unpolished (no sax solo ???). And at times, Ringo sounded like he was calling a square dance ! Kind of hard to describe in written form, but if you need to hear a really bad impersonation, give me a call. One other interesting vocal turn was in "Photograph", on the verse after the instrumental break. Ringo half-sang / half-spoke it, similar to the arrangement on the interlude in "Only You". House was packed (the marquee read "sold out") ... I was pretty close to the stage, and could only see the front of the top tier, which seemed crowded. Speaking of the marquee .... in a bizarre twist, the three "headline" shows listed along the 49th street side were Ringo, Echo and The Bunnymen (another Liverpool act) and The Fab Faux. Hey Steve, Some notes from the Radio City show.
- I noticed in the tour program that Mark Rivera is listed as the musical director for the show. When I went into the theatre and took my seat, who should be sitting in the row behind me but Mark Rivera!
- The set list was the same tonight with the exception of the solo spots.
- At Radio City it was Colin "Are You Looking at Me" and Billy doing an acoustic version of "In the Dark"; he said he had seen someone online had done this arrangement and thought to himself, "Why didn't I think of that", so he called it, "a cover of a cover" of his own song.
- I noticed that at Mohegan Sun they were having some teething problems with the sound mix, and the same thing was going on at Radio City, though not as often.
- Guest tonight was Levon Helm. Ringo took the time to explain that Levon had been in the very first All Starr Band.
- There appeared to be more pockets of real fans at the front this time; the New York audiences near the front tend to be what we euphemistically call "sophisticated", i.e., they don't have a tendency to get up and dance, so I have to hand it to them there were a lot of standing O's.
- I noticed that at Mohegan Sun they were having a lot of teething problems with the sound mix. Various members of the band were signaling that they wanted the mix of their respective instrument or vocal brought up, and more signals when it was where they wanted it.
- Ringo's teleprompter was failing or quit on him during "Never Without You". Ringo was signaling to the crew that he had a problem with his teleprompter, and they sent one tech out, then another. May have been just a loose connection, it seems to be fixed when the second tech came out in front of the stage and appeared to be checking the connection. He did a good job of remembering the lyrics despite the problem.
- The solo spots had been Colin Hay's "Are You Looking at Me" and Hamish doing "A Song for You" (the Leon Russell song).
- Special guests during With a Little Help, Give Peace a Chance (as mentioned previously) were Dr. John (who need to get around with a cane, and was escorted halfway out onto the stage because of his mobility problem) and country singer Lynn Anderson. Both artists were playing at other venues in the casino complex the same night as Ringo.
Update (6/25/08)
Can you stand one more Bethel Woods cancellation story? At the Mohegan Sun Arena show in Uncasville, CT, I went to look at the book of Ringo's art that is being sold at his shows to benefit Ringo's Lotus Foundation. I asked Danny, one of the Artcelebs personnel manning their table, what had happened with the Bethel Woods show, explaining that I had been one of the disappointed Bethel patrons. He was quite open and said, "one of the trucks broke down" coming down from Niagara, He and his colleague had been traveling in a separate van to Bethel Woods. They were already at the venue, getting ready to unload the van and set up when the phone call came. Danny said he was sitting next to his colleague who got the phone call: "I was sitting there next to him and he's saying 'holy s**t!, ho-lee s**t!' and I'm asking, 'what, what happened!'" They said they too were disappointed the show was canceled, but what could they do but enjoy the museum and what the area had to offer, and move on to Uncasville, CT, for Sunday's show. Think about it, if you figure in time for breaking down the set from the previous show, loading out and driving down from Niagara to Bethel which is a six hour trip at best, any kind of transportation delay for whatever reason, would put getting set up at the next venue in time in jeopardy.
Update (6/24/08)
RINGO'S TOUR BEGINS WITH A MISHAP, JUNE 22ND - BETHEL WOODS, NY: 5-6,000 fans came to this new venue, located on the site of the original Woodstock Festival, August 15-17, 1969. It is amazing what they did with the site. As someone who attended Woodstock, I was overwhelmed. They have a Woodstock Museum that is worth the trip. It is less than two hours from NYC. The only problem with the day was a big one. There was a problem with one of the trucks transporting the equipment (from Niagara the night before). The trucks could not get to the site in enough time to set up and the show had to be cancelled. We hear that Ringo was very bummed out about it as he was really looking forward to this concert. Some things are even beyond a Beatle's control. We saw so many FEST regulars there and we had no choice but to take it in stride. He has numerous dates this week on the east coast. You can check out ringostarr.com for all the details.
Hey - I can appreciate Andy Fusco's frustration, but in all fairness .... the "three reasons" for cancellation appear to be one and the same. Band wasn't cleared for customs / equipment vehicle detained at customs / vehicle broke down at border ..... sounds more like an old game of "telephone tag" than some vast conspiracy.Cheers -
Dear Steve: I just got home from the non-concert, four hours one way, stay overnight, and four hours back. So I may be more than just a little personally upset, but I've got a feeling that this whole thing is bogus. The reason for the cancellation on your website (a tour bus/truck broke down one route) is the third one I've heard so far, and three excuses for one cancelled show simply doesn't pass the smell test. I first heard of the cancellation when stopping for gas in Jeffersonville, about 10 miles from the concert. Another guy getting gas said that the cancellation had just been announced on the radio. We turned on the radio and the announcement said that the performers had not been able to clear customs at the border in time to make it to Bethel. Reason No. 1. My wife and I then drove to the site (we'd never been there before) and the perimeter security told us that the show was cancelled because a sound and light equipment vehicle had been detained by Homeland Security when it came in from Canada. Reason No. 2. We then went to the Woodstock museum on site and attached to the doors were professionally printed signs saying that the show had been cancelled and that no make-up date would occur. These were not hastily-made signs. How in the world could they have known instantly that no make-up date would be slated, unless Live Nation cancelled the show and didn't wish to have a make-up date? More suspicious, security wouldn't allow anyone within two hundred yards of the actual concert stage. I just wanted to see whether the concessions were stocked and the Jumbotrons were up---signs that the promoter had really intended to have a concert and that there was a glitch at the border beyond the promoter's control. But security folks denied everyone access and were downright mean about it. I've gotta believe that the promoter bailed out on a feared money loser and is trying to blame Ringo/Customs/Homeland Security/ broken down truck----pick your reason. The whole thing really stinks and I fear that we'll never get to the truth, because the Ringo folks don't dare alienate a powerhouse like Live Nation. Putting Ringo in a 15,000-person venue in 2008 is a chancey proposition. But we all know that and waiting until a couple of hours before showtime to pull the plug is one awful way to do business. ---Andy Fusco
June 21, 2008 -- Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band have been forced to cancel tonight's concert due to a transportation and equipment breakdown at the United States border. The performance will not be rescheduled. Tickets purchased online or by phone will be refunded automatically. Ticket holders who purchased through a Ticketmaster retail location or the Bethel Woods Box Office must request refund by returning the ticket to the point of purchase in person. Bethel Woods and Ringo Starr apologize to ticketholders for the inconvenience. All dates, acts, times and ticket prices subject to change without notice.
Hi, Steve, I drove all the way out to Bethel Woods tonight, only to find out that Ringo's show was CANCELLED! As you can imagine, there were a LOT of disappointed people out there! When I got home, I found this email waiting. Too bad I didn't check my mail before I left! I wonder if I can get Ringo to reimburse me for the 122 miles round trip worth of gas this cost me?! I certainly hope that Ticketmaster will "automatically" issue a refund as they stated. I double checked with a Bethel Woods employee (very nice, incidently!), and he called the box office on his walkie talkie and they told him that I don't have to do a thing if I ordered from Ticketmaster online - it will be refunded automatically as this email says. Anyway, a very disappointing day - to say the least. A splendid time was definitely not guaranteed (or had!) by all!
The parking lot I pulled into was pretty full. Lots of people with Beatles t-shirts on were milling about with very sad looks on their faces. And this was about 2 hours before showtime. There was an electronic sign by the Monticello Raceway and Casino that said "BETHEL WOODS GUESTS - TONIGHTS SHOW IS CANCELLED". That's about 10 miles from Bethel Woods. I saw a couple of cars pull off the road by the sign which I can only imagine meant they were in disbelief. I continued on to find out exactly what was going on. Unfortunately, the sign spoke the truth!! On my way back out, the Bethel Woods staff were stopping cars on the way in...there was quite a line at that point. You still have the BEST Beatles site on the web, Steve! Thanks for all that you do in getting the "news" out... Joanne

Hi Steve, Had tickets for tonight's show at Bethel Woods, but luckily a friend of mine who was also going heard about the show cancellation and called me ... which spared me from taking the 90 minute drive for no reason. I'm bummed mainly because I was taking my daughter with me and it was her FIRST EVER concert! I was excited to be part of that event (ie. her first concert) and to have it be a Beatle made it even more special. So much for that. I'm assuming that the truck breakdown story is "legit", but whether it is or not isn't my real concern: I think that Ringo and/or his management has let his fans down by issuing the "will not be re-scheduled" edict. It's bad enough that the show was canceled, but I can't believe that they couldn't re-schedule it for some other night when Ringo was still in the Northeast or on the East coast.Oh well, life goes on.

OPENING NIGHT SETLIST
Update (6/20/08)
Update (6/19/08)
Hi Steve,Just got back from the Ringo Starr press conference. The All Starr Band did a very short show with each member doing a very brief version of one their hits. Ringo performed short versions of "Liverpool 8" and "With A Little Help From My Friends." During the question and answer period, Ringo stated that he last saw Paul three weeks ago, but then pointed out that he has been in Niagara Falls for two weeks. He talked about the new Love DVD and seemed unconcerned that it did notcome out when planned and said that it will be out by the end of the year. Here is one spoiler, he is performing, for the first time ever, "Oh My My" on this tour. He also made an announcement today. He is asking that everyone, on July 7, his birthday, at exactly noon, stop whatever they are doing and put up the peace signs and simply say, out loud, Peace and Love. He said it will be a beautiful happening. He stated that his ipod has everything from reggae to jazz to rock to country and he keeps in on shuffle. He also just bought a new ipod with 160gbs. He wanted the media to ask more about the All Starrs band but answered every question about the Beatles, etc... I will be playing the performance and the whole press conference on Beatles Universe on the July 6 show.
