Steve,

Beatlefan #178, featuring Rick Glover's amazing cover photo of Paul McCartney in concert, is out and in it readers will find:

Included is a look at the making of the album and an examination of its middling reception and its place in McCartney's career.

Plus we have new book and CD reviews, a report from the "John Lennon: The New York City Years" exhibition and an account of a recent Peter & Gordon performance heavy on McCartney tunes. And the Beatlenews Roundup reports on the rumored lineup for a McCartney rarities set in the works, word of Ringo Starr's work on his next studio album, news of upcoming releases and much more.

    Update (4/2/09)

  • We finally picked up the special issue of MOJO devoted to 1969. In it is an excerpt from Peter Doggett's upcoming book on the Beatles' breakup, "You Never Give Me Your Money." The very interesting excerpt paints a very stark and gloomy portrait of that Beatles period. The book should be an interesting read when it appears next year.

  • The May issue of MOJO features rare and never before seen photos of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's first married days in 1969 taken by French journalist Henry Pessar.

    Update (3/1/09)

  • From Bill King of Beatlefan:

    Hi Steve,

Beatlefan #176 is out, and in it readers will find:

Our cover story by Al Sussman, "Mythbusting 1964," sets the record straight on some of the historical myths that have emerged over the years concerning The Beatles' American breakthrough. It's an oft-told story, how the killing of JFK and a barren U.S. musical scene left U.S. teens ripe for those cute, upbeat British moptops and their high-powered press agents. Only it isn't true. ...

Also in this issue, we take a look at one of the foremost Beatles tribute bands, and Pete Best and his brother Roag (Neil Aspinall's son) continue their chat with Howie Edelson about life in the shadow of the Fab Four and Pete's decision to return to music. Howie also talks with veteran U.K. music figure Dave Stewart about his involvement with three of the former Beatles, and we have an excerpt from Garry Berman's book "We're Going to See The Beatles!"

We also have opinion columns on the controversial ad putting words in John Lennon's mouth and on what Lennon would have thought of the Obama inauguration, and a report on the New York one-man performances by Beatles movie sidekick Victor Spinetti.

Plus we have reviews of new CDs and books. And the Beatlenews Roundup reports on upcoming McCartney shows, the Grammy Awards, Dhani Harrison, and new and upcoming releases.

A sample issue costs $5.50 in the U.S. or $6.50 abroad. U.S. funds only. If you want the latest issue, be sure to specify #176. Send to P.O. Box 33515, Decatur GA 30033. A year's subscription in the U.S. costs only $25.50 for six issues or $30 if sent First Class Mail in an envelope. Canadian and Mexican subscriptions cost $33 per year. International subscriptions to all other countries around the globe are $42 (sent Air Mail) U.S. funds only. Add Beatlefan/PLUS! Web access for an additional $8 when you subscribe to Beatlefan. CREDIT CARDS AND PAYPAL ACCEPTED (goodypress@mindspring.com). For credit card orders, you can fax 404-321-3109 or call 770-492-0444 or e-mail goodypress@mindspring.com.

    Update (2/12/09)

  • Correction: It's the March Uncut that will have "The Beatles and Apple."

    Update (2/10/09)

  • The February issue of Uncut will have a story "The Beatles and Apple," described as "the bizarre inside story of the Fabs' corporate empire."

    Update (1/29/09)

  • Record Collector sent us a copy of their cover story in their current issue on Paul McCartney. The main story, an interview by Jonathan Wingate, examines the Fireman project from both a Fireman and Beatles perspective. It includes an answer, well, sort of, to a question we asked in an Examiner.com column: "Why isn't "Electric Arguments" a Paul McCartney album instead of a Fireman album?" "It would be like sacking him. Fireman – you’re fired (laughs). It wouldn’t be good for the poor man. He’s got a living to make." The magazine also includes a companion article, "Paul McCartney Goes Too Far" by Ian Peel, which looks back at McCartney's past dabblings in the avant-garde. They include "The Ballad of the Skeletons," "Stella May Day," "Clean Machine," "Hiroshima Sky Is Always Blue" (recorded with Yoko Ono) and "Receptacle For The Respectable." This issue, by the way, isn't yet on U.S. newsstands.

    Update (1/28/09)

  • The new issue of Record Collector features a cover story on Paul McCartney as the Fireman. Unfortunately, only a portion is available online unless you're a subscriber. (Thanks to HwyCDRev and Joseph DiCupillo.)

    Update (1/27/09)

  • The current issue of Maccazine is a Wings "Wild Life" special with history, interviews, discography and bootleg listings.

    Update (1/19/09)

  • The latest issue of the British Beatles Fan Club Magazine, issue 31, has a cover story review of "Electric Arguments," but it also has a review of Pete Best's "Hayman's Green" and part one of a series about Brian Epstein by Rodger C. Meachem called "The Man Who Made the Beatles." For more information: http://www.britishbeatlesfanclub.co.uk.

    Update (12/27/08)

  • Beatlefan hits the big 30! Here's Bill King's announcement of his 30th anniversary issue:

Hi Steve, Beatlefan #175, the 30th anniversary issue, is out, and in it readers will find:

Fans pay tribute to all the attention The Beatles lavished on the flip side of their singles by picking their favorite Beatles B-sides and explaining why these songs rate so highly with them.

Our special 30th anniversary section offers some thoughts on the past three decades from the Beatlefan family (and a look at some of our more memorable covers over the past 30 years). And Al Sussman weighs in on what he sees as a generation gap that seems to have developed in Beatles fandom over those years. And our full-color cover has a special anniversary design by Steve Prazak that gives a shout out to a certain U.S. Beatles LP fondly remembered by fans.

Also in this issue, Howie Edelson talks with onetime Beatles drummer Pete Best and his brother Roag (the son of longtime Beatles aide Neil Aspinall) about their relationship with Apple and what it was like to grow up in the shadow of the Fab Four. A fan takes Paul McCartney to task for his unadventurous approach to concerts, especially compared with Bruce Springsteen. And we offer a special section of more fond fan reminiscences of Growing Up With The Beatles. Plus we have reviews of new DVDs, CDs and books. And the Beatlenews Roundup takes a look at how Apple Corps has marked its 40th anniversary.

A sample issue costs $5.50 in the U.S. or $6.50 abroad. U.S. funds only. If you want the latest issue, be sure to specify #175. Update (10/30/08)

  • From Joseph DiCupillo:

    Hello again,

The new issue of the British movie magazine Empire, has a feature on the 500 greatest movies of all time with a whopping 100, yes 100 different covers! All the classics from "The Godfather," "Citizen Kane," "A Clockwork Orange," "Apocalypse Now" right up to "The Dark Knight" have their own cover, but, of course, I wouldn't be telling you this if the Fabs didn't, and they indeed do have a cover of their own for "A Hard Day's Night." Realizing the chances of finding a cover that was 1 in 100 would prove difficult on the magazine racks, I just ordered it online from the website. The cost came out to about 9 or 10 dollars American (pretty standard for these U.K. magazines like Mojo, Uncut etc, quality don't come cheap I guess) You can go here to browse the other covers and maybe even order one as well: http://www.empireonline.com/500/100covers/covers.asp
(Comment: 100 covers? Speaking from someone who has done layout for publication, WOW!)

The September 2008 issue of Guideposts magazine has a very interesting article! It's titled "The Day John Lennon Came to Church" and it's written by a woman who met John while she & her family were in Japan in 1976. They were working at a missionary camp when John & Yoko visited their church one Sunday. A truly lovely read on a Sunday afternoon...

    All the best,

    Update (8/29/08)

  • From Joseph DiCupolo:

Although I do not have the new issue yet, the cover of the new (editor's note: October) issue of Mojo has a Paul interview, and next to his photo reads "My White Album" Plus! The Beatles Remastered." Could this be the exclusive news promised? The long awaited remasters?! I hope it dosen't turn out to be some wishful thinking in the Paul interview to keep us all happy like he and Yoko have done so many times already, promising that it's almost ready on and on... But I highly doubt that mojo would bill it as exclusive Beatles news unless it's definitely happening... anyway fingers crossed. I'll let you know as soon as I get the issue!

(You can see the cover here.)
  • As a side note, we finally got the September issue (yay!). Another reason to buy it: the interview with Randy Newman.

    Update (8/25/08)

  • Here's the cover of the next Beatlefan (courtesy of Bill King. Thanks also to Jorie Gracen for the tech tip.)

    Update (8/24/08)
  • From Bill King of Beatlefan:

    Hi Steve,

Beatlefan #173 is out, and in it readers will find:

"We All Want to Change the World" sees Al Sussman taking a look at the personal and professional changes The Beatles were going through amid all the political and social tumult of the year 1968, while Marc Catone remembers how a late-summer single from the Fabs made him feel better despite all the bad news.

Also in this issue, Ringo Starr's former fiancée Nancy Andrews talks with Howie Edelson about life with a Beatle in the first of a two-part interview, and shares some of her intimate photos from the time, including shots of Ringo and his kids and Ringo and George clowning around on the set of the 1978 "Ringo" TV special. And onetime Apple Records U.S. manager Ken Mansfield offers more tales and pictures from inside Apple Corps.

Plus, The Beatles' first visit to New York City is remembered from the viewpoint of fans who were there in an exclusive excerpt from Garry Berman's oral history "We're Going to See The Beatles!" Rick Glover also provides an illustrated look back at 40 years of collecting "Yellow Submarine" memorabilia, Wally Podrazik discusses the updating of "The Beatles' London," and we look at the CD and DVD chronicling Ringo's 2006 tour.

This issue also has fan reports from the 2008 All Starr Band tour as well as Paul McCartney's shows in Quebec and Ukraine and his appearance with Billy Joel at Shea Stadium, plus Howie Edelson chats with Ringo about the All Starrs and other projects, Kit O' Toole tells you how to save those YouTube videos to your computer, and Rick Rann looks back fondly on his early days as a memorabilia dealer at 1978 fan conventions.

    Update (8/3/08)

  • Just to make it clear for us Americans, the MOJO White Album issue is the September issue, not August.

    Update (8/2/08)
  • Here's what MOJO says about its upcoming White Album issue:

They were going to call it "A Doll’s House," but Family got there first (“Curse you, Roger Chapman and your Larry The Lamb warble!” the Fabs must have grumbled). In the end – imaginatively – they called it "The Beatles," but we – more imaginatively still – call it The White Album. In the days before No Logo, this was visionary (read: accidental) guerrilla branding, turning a band who embodied the nascent ’60s project into a band that represented nothing but themselves. Meanwhile, the music The Beatles made was the most varied, spooked and durable of their careers, a reflection of a disassembling group and a fracturing of their individual personalities under the pressure of fame, drugs, psychic baggage and controversial new girlfriends. 40 years on, MOJO celebrates The White Album’s brilliance and diversity, in a magazine, on an amazing free CD, and online in what can only be described as a cavalcade of content. Dig in!

    Update (7/30/08)

  • From Joseph diCuppolo:

The new issue of the great Mojo Magazine (178) Has a cover story on the Beatles White Album. It comes with a disc of covers of the White Album. It says disc 1. I'm guessing the album will be covered in its entirety over 2 discs, but I'm unsure if issue 178 will have both cd's in a 50/50 ratio or if disc 2 will come with the next issue.

    Update (7/16/08)
  • From Rick Glover:

    Hey Steve....

Might need to file this one under 'Borrowed From The Beatles'- take a look at the cover for the current issue of 'New Parent Guide' - a pet adoption support mag! Nothing really about the Fabs in the pages, but there is a story about 'Household Harmony' that has some Beatle-esque graphics! The completist collectors [guilty!] can get one from www.newparentguide.com

And this gives me the perfect Beatles-related chance to mention the rescue group that my wife, her sister and I started here in Atlanta! Our Royal Potcake Rescue helps find homes for Bahamian dogs and cats, as well as local strays and animal control rescues. We specialize in Potcakes - which is the term for the Bahamian breed, (and nothing to do with 'herbal jazz ciggies) but all breeds are included! We love to vaction in the islands, mon, and wanted to do something to help with the overpopulation problem, there and here in the States. We have already found forever homes for nearly 100 needy critters this year. If you are an animal lover, want a new furry friend, want to know more or help in any way, visit www.potcake.org

And we have added a couple of words to Ringo's mantra....

Peace and Love; Spay and Neuter!!!

Cheers, keep up the great work here!

  • From Bill King of Beatlefan:

    Hi Steve,

Beatlefan #172 is out, and in it fans will find ...

American Ken Mansfield was part of the original team when The Beatles' Apple Records label was put together 40 years ago. In the first part of an extensive two-part conversation about his involvement with the Fabs, Howie Edelson talks with Mansfield about promoting Beatles records, beating Allen Klein in tennis, the Zapple releases, and how a guy from California appealed to The Beatles.

Also in this issue we have more with John Lennon's onetime girlfriend, May Pang, talking about her life with and after Lennon and a recent encounter with Yoko Ono. We also feature more fan tales of Growing Up With The Beatles, including a detailed account written by a 16-year-old fan of seeing the Fab Four in concert in 1966, and a second-generation fan on coming of age in the U.K. in the ’70s. And columnist Kit O'Toole takes a look at how The Beatles' musical greatness is often reflected in the openings of their songs.

Plus Rick Glover's paper collectibles series winds up with a fond look at the treasures to be found within the pages of fan scrapbooks. Also in this issue are reviews of the new "Classic Albums: John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" DVD and new Beatles books, including the photo collection from Ringo's ex, Nancy Andrews.

And this issue's Beatlenews Roundup has news of Paul McCartney's new Fireman track and his concert return to Liverpool and his being made an honorary Doctor of Music by Yale University, plus details of new and upcoming releases, a look at Ringo Starr's HBO special and a roundup of Beatles-related podcasts.

    Update (4/21/08)
  • From Bill King:

    Hi Steve,

Beatlefan #171 is out, and in it readers will find ...

Back in 1978, Ron Schaumburg caught the imagination of fans with "Growing Up With The Beatles," his book about how the Fab Four influenced him as he was growing up in the 1960s. We caught up with Schaumburg and asked him and Beatlefan readers and writers to relive what that experience was like, and we received an overwhelming response. In this issue, we have our chat with Schaumburg and reminiscences from both original fans and those who came along after The Beatles had broken up. Rick Glover and Wally Podrazik take it a step further by pondering growing OLD with The Beatles.

Also in this issue we have two of our ace interviewers talking with John Lennon's onetime girlfriend, May Pang, who has a new photo book out. Ken Sharp discusses "Instamatic Karma" with Pang and in the first of two parts Howie Edelson dishes nitty gritty details with her. Plus we have some of her photos of a relaxed Lennon away from the public eye.

And our paper collectibles series looks back at things to do with your hands while listening to The Beatles — that is, participatory Beatles publications such as punch-out and coloring books and fun kits. Also in this issue are reviews of the new "Tomorrow" DVD of Tom Snyder's interviews with John, Paul and Ringo; Ringo's new "5.1" surroundsound disc; and "Instamatic Karma".

And this issue's Beatlenews Roundup has news of Paul McCartney's recording sessions, the All Starr Band, the Rutles reunion and the Fest for Beatles Fans, and we preview new and upcoming Beatle books. Plus we have fresh Beatlejuice from Norm and Shake in Devil's Radio about just who Nancy Shevell would like to pair Macca with.

A sample issue costs $5.50 in the U.S. or $6.50 abroad. U.S. funds only. If you want the latest issue, be sure to specify #171. Send to P.O. Box 33515, Decatur GA 30033.
