(8/18/01) From Rich Hart:

Ringo and the All Starrs put on a FABULOUS show on Monday night at Atlanta's Chastain Park outdoor amphitheater. The weather was threatening heavy rain all day, and rained after the sound check (about 5:30-6:00), until about 7:00 (gates opened at 6:30), but although hot and sticky, there was no rain during the show.

The show started promptly (8:02) and lasted until 10:25 - the set-list was the same as has been posted previously. However, I was interested to see how much time he's up front singing versus playing the drum kit, so the following list indicates Ringo's activities.

Sound check (clearly audible from outside the gates and fence):
1. Ringo on mic, said hello to the people waiting outside at the gate, hoped more would make it to the show
2. Jam (could be derived from a song by one of the All Starrs, but I didn't recognize it) with good drums from Ringo and Sheila E.
3. Photograph (all the way through the number)
4. Snippet from the end of a piano piece that Howard Jones played with a classical feel; Howard was explaining how the end should go as he played, and Ringo and Sheila E. combined with a soft touch cymbal roll to finish it.
The band sat or stood around off stage, photographs were taken by someone who was on stage but off to the side, and then band members were not visible. (Security said no autographs would be signed.)

The Show:
1. Photograph (Ringo)
Ringo commented that the Chastain Park in Atlanta is one of his favorite venues; he thanked the audience for coming out, given the "probable" rain; commented that he hadn't been rained out yet.
2. Act Naturally (Ringo)
Commented we'd have a good time in "Atlanta by the Sea"
3. Court of the Crimson King (Greg Lake) Ringo on Drum Kit
4. Logical Song (Roger Hogson) Ringo on Drum Kit
5. No One is to Blame (Howard Jones)) Ringo on Drum Kit
6. Cleveland Rocks (Ian Hunter) Ringo on Drum Kit
7. Love Bizarre (Sheila E.)Ringo on Drum Kit
At this point, it was starting to get dark. At Chastain Park, many concertgoers set up small TV-tray-like picnic tables, complete with candles. Ringo commented that he was glad it was getting dark because with the many candles, it looked like it the park was full of people. In fact, I was told about 4500 tickets were sold, and the amphitheater holds 7-9,000 depending on the set-up.
8. Boys (Ringo) Ringo on Drum Kit
9. Give a Little Bit (Roger Hogson) Ringo on Drum Kit
10. You're 16 (Ringo)
11. Yellow Submarine (Ringo)
After the song, Ringo accepted some flowers from young girls and other fans, then after flowers, papers and candy were thrown on stage, he said he'd "just have to move this crap off stage." Afterwards I believe a bird sitting on the lights above, did some business. Ringo said "Something just sh*t on me! Hah, hah. Sorry kids, Uncle Ringo has gone mad!"
12. Karn Evil (Greg Lake) (Ringo off stage; cleaning up? New silver-colored vest when he came back out.)
13. I'm the Greatest (Ringo)
"Written for him by a dear friend of his"
Ringo thanked the audience for coming
14. The No No Song (Ringo)
"This song is the reason we're here this evening"
15. Back off Boogaloo (Ringo) (moved to Drum kit near end of the song)
16. Things Can Only get Better Ringo on Drum Kit
17. I Still Love Rock n' Roll (Howard Jones) Ringo on Drum Kit
18. Glamorous Life (Sheila E.) Ringo on Drum Kit
Just before this number, (with bongo drums and cymbals set-up center stage) Sheila E. introduced 10 year-old "Jonathan" who had sent her a note backstage saying that he was a drummer and how much he'd like to meet her. She said that even better, he was going to have the best seat in the house, on stage, and gave him a hug. She said that she had a charity (I didn't catch the name, "Angel Love" perhaps) to benefit battered children. I don't know if she implied that Jonathan had been helped by the charity or if he was being highlighted just to draw attention to kids in general. In any case, as the song was starting, Ringo gave Jonathan a pair of his drumsticks, to "give him something to play with." This was a great number (I had not heard before), Sheila E. was fabulous on the bongo set-up, very energetic, lots of stick throws, spins, etc., and Ringo was solid "back-up' on his kit including fills and solos, with Jonathan playing 'air drums." Near the end of the song, Jonathan was invited up to play Sheila's drums, and did a good job (with Ringo filling in energetically - making Jonathan sound better than he was?) This was a crowd pleaser, and highlighted Sheila E. - and she virtually stole the show.
19. I Wanna Be Your Man (Ringo) Ringo on Drum Kit
20. Lucky Man (Greg Lake) Ringo on Drum Kit
21. Everlasting Love (Howard Jones) Ringo on Drum Kit (another Ringo drum solo!)
22. Take the Long Way Home (Roger Hodgson) Ringo on Drum Kit
23. All the Young Dudes (Ian Hunter) Ringo on Drum Kit
24. It Don't come Easy (Ringo)
Encore
Ringo said that generally they would run off stage, listen to the crowd cheers, "towel off - that says something about how far we've come, but we're doing that right now" but that "it's just too damn hot for that nonsense." But he asked us to cheer anyway.
25. Don't Go Where the Road Don't Go (Ringo)
26. With a Little Help from my Friends (Ringo)
"Peace and love, it's the only answer"

Great show - don't miss it! The Atlanta crowd was a bit lame (compared to Red Rocks last year), but I think everyone had a good time - including the All Starrs.
