Ringo, Rosemont Theater, Chicago 8/12/03

(8/18/03) From Doug Taber:

Don't know what took me so long, but since no one else has sent you a review of Ringo's Chicago show, I thought I would. The Rosemont Theater was a very nice venue. Just the right size for a show like this. The sound was not always the best, at least from my seat on the first row of the balcony. Sometimes the vocals were lost in the mix (especially on Ringo's songs). Other than that, a wonderful show. I really enjoyed this lineup of the All-Starrs because I've always liked music from the early 80s. A lot of it sounds dated now, but still I have a certain nostalgia for it. Ringo was in fine form this night. Paul Carrack may not be hitting all of the high notes these days, but what great songs. "Tempted" is one of the finest tunes of any era. Interesting to note that each of Paul's songs was from a different band. Colin Hay sounds just the same as he did with Men At Work. I always thought they were a fun band. Nice to hear him do "Overkill", probably my favorite of the Men At Work songs if not the most popular. John Waite still has his powerful rock voice. And Sheila E. really does shine in a show like this. I never have been a big fan of her songs, but with the All-Starrs, she is very entertaining.

I wasn't keeping notes, but the setlist seemed to be the same as the main setlist for this tour with a few exceptions. The band only did one song without Ringo..."Here Comes The Sun". I believe on some dates they have been doing two songs. And the big difference for this show was they did NOT perform "Never Without You"! I was disappointed not getting to hear that. Not sure why Ringo didn't sing it. Maybe he was thrown off by the kid onstage when he walked back on (Sheila E. had pulled a young girl onstage before "Here Comes The Sun" because Sheila had seen her crying trying to get to Ringo...She kept the girl onstage through the song and the girl got a hug from Ringo when he came back).

And other than the people at the front of the stage, most of the crowd this night seemed a little too laid back. They just weren't getting into it. Ringo commented after one of his jokes "I usually get a laugh for that" (the crowd did not respond). John Waite asked "Wanna sing with me?" during "Missing You". When nobody sang along, he said "I guess not".

As usual, no encore. Although the crowd did finally come alive at the end and tried to get him to come back out. All in all, it was thoroughly enjoyable. My friend who went with me was not familiar with most of the band by name, but recognized and sang along with almost every song. This band plays well together. Try to catch one of the last remaining shows if you can!
