Ringo Darien Lake 7/26/03

(7/27/03) From Rob Shackleton:

Here is a review for last night's show:

Ringo & his All Starr's took the stage at 7:30 and opened with It Don't Come Easy. The band was terrific and Ringo had a few one-liners that just had everyone laughing. After about 45 minutes Ringo asked the fans strolling in if they should stop and start over again? "Doesn't it say 7:30 on 'your' ticket?" And he asked during the intro to Your Sixteen, "Any young girls in the audience?...."Any of them Mine?" He then said, "Dont worry,I just make it up as I go along.I mean it with love."

The highlight of the show was the entire band's (minus Ringo) version of Here Comes the Sun that drew an amazing response from the crowd. Don't Pass me By was a real treat ,too.

From Art S.:

We attended the July 26 concert at Darien Lake, NY. The Band started right at 7:30, with everyone coming on stage except Ringo...the first song was "It Don't Come Easy", and Ringo made his entrance in time to bop up to the mic for the opening line...He was wearing blue jeans with a white untucked button up shirt and a vest...

Overall, Ringo was great, joking with the crowd, taunting the folks that showed up late during the 3rd or 4th song by asking them "What time does it say on your ticket?" and "a round of applause for the people who were here on time!" His vocals were strong and he had a lot of energy...he did botch the words on "Honey Don't" right at the beginning, he also stumbled a little on "Don't Pass Me By". The latter he started out on piano and sang one short verse with a false ending, before strolling over to the mic to be-bop through the rest of the song.

He was much more enthusiastic than the crowd,! which was well short of a sell out. Paul Carrack was lackluster on "How Long", but fabulous on "The Living Years". Colin Hay was the disappointment of the night. His heart wasn't into the usually upbeat numbers from his "Men At Work" days. He was constantly looking at his chord hand on the guitar, as if he was unsure of himself...his playing also reflected that. John Waite was great with his highlight being of course "I Ain't Missing You".

The surprise (for us at least) was Sheila E. who wailed on the drums. She played better with one hand than most guys using both hands.

When it was time for the band to leave and wait for the applause for an encore, Ringo told the audience "We've all been here before. This is the part where we go backstage and you all clap and applaud, and then we come back out and sing one more, so just pretend with us"...the crowd went nuts...after a moment Ringo started slow motion jogging in place, then said "OK, here we come...we're coming back now...here we are!!!". It was pretty funny, and the closed, of course, with "A Little Help From My Friends"

All in all it was a great night for any Beatles fan and certainly a worth while evening for any music fan.
