Update (5/24/03) From Nigel Tant:
Hi Steve,Just a note to say that the Brainwashed album seems at last to be getting the attention it deserves. Lots of press ads, lots of airplay for 'Any Road'....and I was in my local Woolworths today, and they had 'Brainwashed' at No 3 in the album chart! Not sure whether this is right, but it was great to see it there! The new repackage with the slipcase is helping I'm sure; I'm afraid that original picture always had me baffled.
AOL is showing the Any Road video right now (Friday afternoon). It appears on the bootup screen. It is probably only for a very limited time since these screens are usually updated a few times a day. It may be accessible later under "aol music" or "aol first view". Good luck catching it. I'm surprised to see it is not actually video but a series of still shots similar to those typically seen on fan sites. But very nice.
Here in Sydney, Australia on the Cable TV channel musicMax, George's video clip for "Any Road" and Ringo's video clip for "Never Without You" have been featured. Any Road has been played once a day for the past week and Never Without You has been played just twice over the same period. MusicMax has also played the Beatles video clip for "Rain", as well as the Beatles performing live "This Boy" in black and white and "I'm Down" in colour. Maybe these video's were released to tie in with the Anthology DVD? And finally, CNN International on its music program, "The Music Room" will feature an interview with Paul McCartney on 30th May. Keep up the good work.
Steve, I should have sent this in sooner, but I thought someone else would mention it. Sunday afternoon, on ABC's coverage of the Indianapolis 500 time trials, they mentioned the Beatles had stayed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Motel during their 1964 tour. They talked about George being a racing fan, and then gave some misinformation about him writing a song about "driving" on his "soon to be released album." Then they played about half of Any Road. I haven't seen the video for Any Road, so I'm not sure if what they showed was the actual video, or something they put together. It had a lot of scenes of George at various tracks and showed George in the back of a limo, playing guitar, with Jackie Stewart. Wish I'd had the tape running, it went by too fast. Just wondered if anyone else saw this.
Update (5/21/03)
To clarify the reissue of Brainwashed album in the UK. The album has not actually been reissued what has happened is that all new stock to suppliers now has slipcase (featuring b&w Brian Roylance photo of George on front and original artwork from front of digipak on reverse this has been slightly edited to allow space for track listing see attached images) over the original digipak. These come shrink wrapped. Supplies of the slip cases have also been sent to retailers with existing stocks to be put over any copies of the digi paks they still have in stock. Apart from this the album remains the same. Hope this helps. Alli |
Update (5/20/03)
Any Road debuted on the UK top 40 at #37.The repackaged Brainwashed cd was released today in the UK. It's not clear if a slipcase was added over the regular CD or not. (I can tell you that HMV's website lists it as a CD with a slipcase). It does have a separate catalog number, however.
The "repackaged" album cover is the same black and white photo as the Any Road single, but it carries the Brainwashed title.
New on georgeharrison.com in the media section is a TV advertisement for the UK for the repackaged album which mentions the single and features clips from the Any Road video.
Some of the UK Sunday papers also carried ads for the album.
(Thanks also to Richard Sinclair and Allison Devine.)
Steve, Thought you might like to see the attached feel free to put it on Abbeyrd. The poster is about 6ft by 4ft and has now appeared at several stations on the London Underground system this particular one was snapped at Kings Cross Station on Sunday 18th May.Regards,
Alli
The clip of the Anyroad video showing George in his painted mini which she refers to as not being from MMT is one of those blink and you miss it extras from Anthology it was filmed I believe at Brands Hatch in 94/95 speciffically for the anthology but lots of it was never used just a very brief clip.
One clip not mentioned is from an appearance on the BBC Wogan program from around 1988. This was done be a satellite link from the US, where amongst other things George talks about Bulgarian folk music.
Update (5/19/03)
Well, my word, all phases of George's career are in the Any Road video...now that Capitol has provided The Harrison Alliance with it's own VHS copy of the video, I can give you more of a rundown on the content than from what I've seen online. It's a shame it's in that format, it really should be seen on a bigger screen. It opens with a still of George from 1987 (same as the new cover of I Me Mine...US edition) with "Give Me Plenty of that Guitar" and goes straight into video of George on his 1974 North American tour... The "boat and and a plane and a car and a bike and a bus and a train" line has clips of George boating a boat to Greece when the Beatles made their trip there looking for an island retreat with Alex Mardas, aka Magic Alex... cut over to various boardings on planes (one to/from India), trains (to Bangor to see Maharishi speak), cars (footage from Faster video), bikes--on a motorbike as a young boy... etc. I'm sure I don't have everything in the order they appear in on the video, as the edits are pretty quick... but (deep breath here) there is footage of George's 74 tour concert clip and a news footage clip (in the garden at the White House if memory serves); clips from the Bangla Desh film, and from George's Faster video, This is Love video (TIL vid footage may be some outtakes, I'd have to review the This is Love video to compare it); Got My Mind Set on You video (both versions); When We Was Fab clip, Magical Mystery Tour footage (Blue Jay Way and a piece of race footage in his Mini); All Things Must Pass EPK footage, being interviewed at the time of the release of "Cloud Nine." Also, at the Imagine sessions; the Heart Beat '86 concert in Birmingham England; old Beatles footage from their arrival in the rain in Australia, as well as some early Beatles era footage on and off stage; BBC footage of George and Jackie Stewart at the 1999 British Grand Prix; a clip of George's cameo in the Life of Brian; animation from Yellow Submarine, the Simpsons (limo scene) and the ATMP commercial; footage from his participation at the Gunnar Nilsson charity race (Gunnar was an F1 driver that died of cancer) in June 1979, in the pits, and also when he stalled the vintage race car at the start line! Many stills mixed in from when he was a boy with is first guitar, the Mike Mac photo of the Beatles (John, Paul, George and Dennis), Hamburg photos, photos from the sixties, seventies, with Emerson Fittipaldi at the Phoenix Grand Prix, on a tractor in the 1980s... I'm sure I've missed something, there is so much packed into this video, including-- Home movies from Rishikesh as well as a trip to Tahiti in 64; a piece of footage I haven't seen of George in his famous red painted Mini that's not from MMT time; in a car in India in 1966; coming out of a pool (67?); footage from later years I've not seen, of George driving his blue McLaren F1 sedan and sitting in his blue McLaren; and in the studio playing banjulele (gotta love those Hawaiian shirts!). Near the end are a few sections of the now famous outtakes of his appearance on VH1 in 1997 singing an acoustic version of Any Road, pretty well synced with the song... and the end features lots of footage of George with that beautiful smile... I hope someone puts this on a cable channel near you, you just don't get the full effect on a computer screen!
Update (5/17/03)
Oooo eee... A VHS cassette of Any Road arrived here at THA from Capitol, along with a promo CD. What a nice video! Nice to see it on the bigger screen than on the computer, you could almost miss some of the clips on the small screen. A shame it's not being released on dvd... A shame the single isn't being released worldwide! Lots of old footage, but much to my surprise, footage I haven't seen before, from later years. Really nice job. Hope it gets aired on VH1 or VH1 Classics (which seems to have a fixation on the 1980s). VH1 Classics does have an email request show, tho they usually ask for "classics"... If y'all get VH1 Classics maybe you ought to try emailing in a request!
Update (5/15/03)
The revamped georgeharrison.com site is up and running, and if you can navigate through the garden path full of temptations, and you MUST do this to get to the main site (and you should, it's fun and interesting to find your way through...the clarity of the music and the dark horse logo's condition in the corner will give you clues if you are on the right path) you get to George's garden, as in the interior of the Brainwashed digipak. Once you get to the garden, you can save your position so you don't have to go through the path again. There are a number of items in the news section. One of the news items: ----------------(Also thanks to Gary Leftwich, Tony Frye and Trini Schultz.)
May 12 The Any Road single is released, today May 12th, followed next week by a newly packaged version of Brainwashed on the 19th May. Any Road will be backed by the album track Marwa Blues. The video has been added to the VH1 B-list as well as VH1 Classic and will appear on TOTP2 on May 13. At radio, Any Road was Radio 2's single of the week from April 14 and went straight to the A-list. It is also B-listed at Radio London and being added to ILR playlists. ---------------------------------------- Most of the other news was info about the launch site and stuff we already knew. Click on Brainwashed on the right hand of the screen, you get a video and audio section. In the video section is the video of Any Road available for playing in a variety of players and connection speeds. In the audio section is the EMI produced version of "All About Brainwashed" hosted by Jools Holland (which I only ever heard on online radio out of Canada last November; this version is somewhat different from the Westwood One version that was aired in the US in January) George's Jukebox has various favorites of George's. Currently play: Beach Boys "God Only Knows" as the first track selection, and "Spam" by Monty Python, "Springtime for Hilter" by Mel Brooks' soundtrack from the Producers, "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie" and "Shelter from the Storm" by Bob Dylan...unfortunately I didn't have time to sit through all the selections. The info on the jukebox section said the selections will be changed now and again. There is also a message board, and a shop link that says "George Harrison shop opening soon", plus a registration list so you can get updates from them (html or text email formats). There's a gallery, downloads for wallpaper, screensavers...and a web cam (not up yet) that is supposed to monitor a special flower growing... I'm not sure I've seen all of the site yet!
FIRST NEW GEORGE HARRISON MUSIC VIDEO IN 15 YEARS TO BE RELEASED ²Any Road², one of the standout tracks from the acclaimed Brainwashed album, is out now. It was released on Monday 12th May. The accompanying promo video includes previously unreleased footage that lovingly celebrates George's life. His humour and spirit are captured in the studio, in concert, casual shots and animated footage. "Any Road" is the first new George Harrison music video since "This is Love" from Cloud Nine in 1988. Written by George Harrison, "Any Road" is produced by George, Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison. The track features George on slide and acoustic guitars and banjulele; Jeff Lynne on bass, piano and backing vocals; Dhani Harrison on electric guitar and backing vocals; and Jim Keltner on drums. Critics worldwide have embraced the album. Time Out believe, Œ... Harrison has left his fans with plenty to be proud of.¹ and The Times see Brainwashed as '... a record that deserves to stand alongside his best solo work'. Mojo went on to say that Œ... George Harrison book ended his solo years with his two best albums.' The New York Times said, "The music is vintage Harrison: laid-back but by no means underpowered, with melodies tugged between major and minor keys, and lyrics that are filled with humorous wordplay but are also cuttingly direct. Harrison's trademark slide guitar shines through everywhere and is particularly fluid in the instrumental "Marwa Blues" and at the start of "Stuck Inside A Cloud." This is not a guitarist who retired to the garden." George¹s new web site, www.georgeharrison.com , has also just been launched. The site contains daily news, a message board, an online shop, a busy media section which includes audio clips and video footage, plus ³George¹s Jukebox² which includes some of his all time favourite songs. Click on down, avoid getting ³Brainwashed² and take a stroll through George¹s new online garden.

Update (5/11/03)
I have some rather good news! I got a letter from the RRHOF in Cleveland, OH today asking to renew my membership and it says that there IS going to be a "tribute retrospective to former Beatle George Harrison in early 2004" So it is going to happen! Can't wait to see it! Keep up the great work!
Update (5/8/03) From Kristen Tash:
The Today Show previewed George's Any Road video, showing about 45 seconds of it around 7:50am. It was really lovely, including footage from the '74 tour, George climbing out of a swimming pool, sitting by a fire in what looked like one of the FP caves, bits from past videos (When We Was Fab, This is Love), Bangla Desh, still shots and bits from the Beatle days. I do hope we get to see it in its entirety...!
Update (5/7/03) Our contact at EMI has ended the questions about the "Any Road" single. Here's the reply we got Tuesday:
The format (of the "Any Road" video) is Quicktime and there are no other versions of the single in Europe.
The video for the "Any Road" CD is in a CD-ROM format, not DVD (I wondered the same thing). Therefore won't be regional.
Update (5/6/03) More info on "Any Road" from Patti Murawski:
Steve, just a comment about the CD single listings for "Any Road" to clarify what I have found. Amazon UK lists only one version, a single "Any Road / Marwa Blues," and no video. However Amazon US does list two distinct versions. One is labeled "enhanced" single with "Any Road / Marwa Blues / Enhanced Video" as I mentioned in my previous post. The other is a standard CD single with "Any Road / Marwa Blues." Both are labeled "import" and I'm just guessing here, but it's probably Canadian, since, as I understand from an EMI Canada product email update I received, that "Any Road" is supposed to be released in Canada. The enhanced CD with video (the description is not explicit so I can't tell you if it's dvd or a cd rom version as was the video on Capaldi's Anna Julia disc), if it is dvd, would have to be a Canadian import in order to be coded for North American dvd viewing. I had contacted EMI Canada about the two different versions of the single, but so far there's been no response.
Also, Alli Devine says she has ordered a vinyl version of "Any Road" from her local store.
Update (5/5/03) From Matt Hurwitz:
Hi, Steve-- My contact at EMI says there is only one CD single (at least in England) of "Any Road," as described by Patti Murawski. No word on any other versions of the single (unless there's an "international" version of the disc without the video).
Update (5/4/03) An updated description on the "Any Road" single from Patti Murawski:
Amazon US now lists the "Enhanced" version of Any Road with track listings, and there's good news! It will include video... :Tracks listed are:
- Any Road
- Marwa Blues
- Enhanced Video
Update (5/2/03) From Diane:
Dhani Harrison is to be interviewed on BBC Radio 2 on the Johnnie Walker Programme on 22nd May.
Update (4/30/03) Patti Murawski tells us that the listings for the Any Road single has now changed at Amazon.com (U.S.). Any Road (Part 1) is now being listed as an enhanced CD, with no other description. Any Road (Part 2) is being listed as a "CD single import" with no other description.
Update II (4/29/03) George Harrison's "Brainwashed" site is being updated. You can register for updates. (Thanks to Karen Dyson and Adam Powell.)
Update (4/28/03)
First New George Harrison Music Video in 15 Years to Be Released HOLLYWOOD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2003-- If you don't know where you're going Any road will take you there. One of the standout tracks from the acclaimed "Brainwashed" album, "Any Road," on Dark Horse/EMI, will be serviced to radio next week.
The accompanying promo video includes previously unreleased footage that lovingly celebrates George's life. His humor and spirit are captured in the studio, in concert, casual shots and animated footage.
Critics have embraced the album. Rolling Stone magazine gave the record a four star review, saying, "`Brainwashed' is a warm, frank goodbye. Fear and acceptance run together in these songs, anger as well as serenity. Most importantly, there are lots of guitars. Harrison died before he could finish `Brainwashed.' But his co-producers -- his son Dhani and ELO's Jeff Lynne -- have completed the album with impressive sensitivity, to the point that Harrison feels immensely present ... It is a fine, enchanting epitaph."
The New York Times said, "The music is vintage Harrison: laid-back but by no means underpowered, with melodies tugged between major and minor keys, and lyrics that are filled with humorous wordplay but are also cuttingly direct. Harrison's trademark slide guitar shines through everywhere and is particularly fluid in the instrumental `Marwa Blues' and at the start of `Stuck Inside a Cloud.' This is not a guitarist who retired to the garden."
Just to say that I've just seen the whole of the new George promo video for 'Anyroad'! It is awesome! Extremely well edited! There are clips/stills of George in trains, planes cars etc to fit with lyrics. Footage of him from the 74 tour edited to look like he's playing the guitar solo, footage of him at the race track in a driving suit, and playing the ukelele/banjo, interspersed with lots of clips from Beatles footage and the Yin and yang footage from the vh1 programmme. Clips of him in the Mclaren F1 and the psychedelic mini and bits from the anthology video's and from Crackerbox Palace and This Is Love and When We Was Fab! I am well impressed.
Update (4/16/03)
Hi, Steve-- According to my contact at EMI in England, George's single for "Any Road" will be coming out in the UK on Monday May 12. The "B-side" is "Marwa Blues." But there's also a special bonus - a brand new video for "Any Road," which, I'm told, is really cool.
Update (4/13/03)
Steve, CD Universe is listing the CD single for Any Road as May 12th. No word on any other songs.
Update (3/19/03)
Update (2/28/03)
Hey Steve, A couple of George items: A CD single of "Any Road" will be issued in the UK on March 17th, according to the Siren Disc website (they have been quite reliable in the past on such matters) http://www.sirendisc.com/cgi/panel.cgi. No details yet on extra tracks. Also, a second, 9 minute long Brainwashed EPK is out there, featuring a newer interview with Dhani and more of the Jeff Lynne interview done for the original 7 minute EPK included in the Brainwashed limited edition set. That's all for now.
Keep up the good work as always,
Mark

Update (2/15/03) From Jennifer Campbell:
Hi Steve, About the cardinal in Vatican Blues, how about... Paul Casimir Marcinkus, a Catholic Bishop and former pres. of the Vatican Bank, who was investigated for money laundering and was one of the prime suspects in the poisoning of Pope John I on Sept 29, 1978. http://www.angelfire.com/ky/dodone/JPI.html.That George!

Update (2/13/03)
Thought I'd let you know there is a new George Harrison Promo CD out in the U.K. for the "Brainwashed" album. It's the lead track for the album, "Any Road". It has the catalogue number CDRDJ 6601 and contains just the one track. Maybe EMI and Capitol are finally getting out and supporting this wonderful last (as far as we know ) selection of songs from George.
Update (2/14/03
Don't know if anyone's responded to Jody's question about "P2 Vatican Blues" (a great song!), but what I hear is "Let's hear it, CARDINAL Marchingez". My take on this is that George just made up the name, and he's inviting the good Cardinal to take a solo.A few measures later, he says "Play it Card, baby". Having always been a big fan of George's wry sense of humor, this makes me laugh out loud every time.
Love the site - thanks and keep up the great work!
Update (2/11/03)
- On the 2nd track of George's "Brainwashed," "P2 Vatican Blues," @ 1:14 in GH seems to say "Let's hear it, Carl Marchingez..." before the solo. Who is that?
Update (1/31/03)
Had a chance to compare the two programs. There were pieces of interviews that were in the EMI produced program with Jools Holland that was aired on Canadian radio that were not in the Westwood One production, and vice-versa... there were bits in the Westwood One production that were not included in the Canadian broadcast. Also noticed there were some inaccuracies in the copy Westwood One wrote for their own production.
Update (1/30/03)
Update (1/27/03)
My local classic rock station had this running during the disappointing Super Bowl, so I don't know how many have been listening, but the All About Brainwashed radio special by Westwood One is marvelous!! An hour and a half of George music with Dhani, Olivia, Jeff Lynne and Jim Keltner, with host Bob Buckman. I obviously wasn't writing every word down (I can't write that fast, LOL), but here's some bits and pieces, paraphrased for the most part, that I thought were wonderful and charming. RE: Any Road. Dhani said it actually came about under a Banyan tree on Maui, there was a koi pond with a sign, and on one side of the sign was the 'notice' something like "you can't change your ??? (direction?) but you CAN adjust your sail" and on the other side was "and if you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." He also said that his Dad was playing around with lines and had "Sometimes you're cool....hey, Dhan, what's a word that's *bad*...to which Dhani replied, I dunno, sometimes you suck? no, something naff... ummm, sometime you're lame? OK....and he used that!!" Very cute!Re: Marwa Blues: Olivia said it was her all time favorite, that it reflected or expressed a longing that was beyond this world and that the notes were from a raga that probably expressed the same 'feeling' (my words, not hers). Dhani said that during the production of that song, he ended up outside in tears many times, that it was a "lament of man" and that it reflected his Dad's search for perfection, God, pain and joy, then said "it's a good little number, then."
Re: Pisces Fish: Dhani said "I'm a Leo and I can't shut up, big mouth, but Dad was a definite Pisces" and "the river...well, it's not the Thames in Henley, I'll tell you that!" A little later, Olivie said that she'd traveled the river with George many times, but it was also the river leading to the ocean of bliss, and that George was relentless in his search, he never gave up, and she thinks he found it.
Jeff talked about George's love of George Formby music and how George taught him (Jeff) to play the uke. He said that George had pulled all the song bits from George Formby movies (?) and had put them on reel to reel and that he (Jeff) had heard it at least 10 times, that it was comedy but also very good music.
Re: Brainwashed: Dhani said that Brainwashed is a very angry song, lashing out at (basically) society and computers and cell phones, we're all being brainwashed, and remarked even when you're watching football, there's a stock ticker along the bottom of the screen. Olivia said "I think he DID want to say to people that there IS an alternative, we are just but a tiny part of this incredible creation."
Dhani did a cute little anecdote (can't remember what song he was talking about), said "My dad had a 3 finger piano style, we all called it 'Curse of the Claw,' one hand at a time and three fingers only."
He also talked about how his Dad had told him about John being shot and how that day was like a page ripped out of the script of his life, and someone had put in a new page and written horrible things there. The same thing happened on the day he (George) was almost murdered, it was like another page was ripped out of the script of his life.
And finally, Olivia talked about Rocking Chair in Hawaii, and said 'we did have a rocking chair in Hawaii, but that someone had (recently?) handed her a bootleg called The Making of All Things Must Pass (!!!!!) and that George was on it doing a country/western version of the song, he didn't have all the words and was yodeling, etc.. She said "I was surprised because I thought it was about the rocking chair in Hawaii, but it was around in some form way back when."
Oh, and on Rising Sun (I think that's the one they were discussing), Dhani said that the day that they got the cellos 'just right,' that he was the happiest he'd ever been for just about 30 seconds, then said that it all came crashing down and it was the saddest he'd ever felt when he realized his dad wasn't there to enjoy the moment.
An absolutely fabulous radio special, and if you get it in your market, be sure and have a listen.
Hi Steve, The Westwood One edition of "All About Brainwashed" differs in a couple of ways from the edition aired on Canadian radio in November. First off, don't know whose decision it was, but the Westwood One edition was redone taking Jools Holland out of the project as host, replacing him with Bob Buckman, a DJ at Q104 in New York. Second, for the most part the program is the same, some rewriting of the introductions to the interview segments and songs, but the big difference is that there are segments of interview that are included in the Westwood One edition that were not include in the Canadian edition. Westwood One also did some electronic scrambling on the "bullsh*t" line in "Brainwashed" . . . I have mixed feelings about them injecting segments of George's music (from other albums) behind the interviews... I don't recall them doing that in the Canadian edition. I thought it was interesting that the credits at the end of the program said it was produced by Westwood One. Technically, I guess that's correct, they extracted the interviews and sort of did their own program around it. The Canadian edition's credits said the program was produced by EMI. Anyway, hopefully this will stimulate some interest in the album as we approach George's birthday, though unfortunate that some markets are running the program opposite the Super Bowl. Hi Steve, Thought I'd say that on ABC Radio National (Government funded Radio broadcasted nationally) they played George's Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea. This may not mean that it has been released to stations for Radio play, though, as the various ABC Radio stations tend to just play anything. Album tracks, sometimes just straight off an old 78 etc. Also, in regards to the promotion I'm from sleepy old Brisbane. Still, third biggest city in Australia. Makes ya wonder what the rest of the country is getting. And sorry for sounding like such a whinging little git in my post before, but I guess it reflects the whole mood surrounding this troubled album release. Great site,
Gavan M McAllister
Update (1/26/03)
Steve-- Other markets will also be airing the "All About Brainwashed" special this weekend. Local to me, the Springfield, Mass. station will be airing it Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. Unfortunately you won't find an affiliate list on the westwood one website. I suggest logging on to your local classic rock stations websites and checking around for this week's radio special.
I don't know what part of Australia, Gavan M. McAllister is from but on Sydney TV the 7 minute George Harrison Brainwashed promotional piece was shown. I was lucky enough to see it on the pay TV channel MusicMax. This music channel which caters for the over 25's did also play a number of times a short 30 second ad promoting the Brainwashed CD. But yes the Commercial TV stations have not promoted Brainwashed at all. In Sydney the radio station 2UE was playing a short 25 second ad promoting the George Harrison Brainwashed CD, but I am yet to hear any tracks from the album on Sydney radio. As for newspapers, all the major Sydney newspapers in mid December 2002 reviewed the Brainwashed CD. Favourable reviews were in the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and Sun Herald. But the reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald said to buy "the reissue of All Things Must Pass instead". Also the February 2003 issue of the Australian edition of Rolling Stone magazine has a review for the Brainwashed CD. And finally once again on pay TV, the news channel CNN on its weekly music show "The Music Room" played a different version of the 7 minute Brainwashed promotional piece. The difference was that the short Jim Keltner segment was replaced with a Paul McCartney segment. And CNN also played a 2 minute "Concert for George" rehearsal piece featuring Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, Eric Clapton and Billy Preston. Thank you for the best Beatles site on the net. Regards
Steven L.

Hi Steve, The program the Seattle radio station is airing may be the EMI produced "All About Brainwashed" which aired in Canada by the Sound Source radio network around the anniversary of George's death this past November. The program was hosted by Jools Holland and featured interviews with Dhani, Olivia, Jeff Lynne, and if I remember correctly, Jim Keltner had a word or two also. It ran about 50 minutes long (just the interview parts) without commercials or music. Patti Murawski, Editor

Update (1/16/03)
Hi, Sorry for what might be a dumb question: what the hell is a Digipack? The discussion about Brainwashed in a jewel case made me realise that I had no clue what the hell a digipack is and that, indeed, this must be another item that the Australian market never saw. (After) reading your site with a bunch of Americans talking about seeing the 7 minute thing on the cinema screen, I just have to sit and stew in my own juices. In Australia there has not been a single television ad, radio ad, newspaper ad or even an ad in a music magazine. The most I've seen is a 40 or 50 word snippet under "in the studio" sections of music magazines. In the shops there is not so much as a poser on the wall. The boxed set was never released (or, put more correctly, it was but only three hundred were, alot of which were snapped up by the bloody employees at EMI). On the front of the Jewel cases (of which there are many. Probably because no one is buying it because no one knows it exists) there is a sticker saying "new studio album, includes Stuck Inside A Cloud" which is amusing because Stuck Inside a Cloud has been played exactly no times on Australian radio. Now I find that the Digipack is actually something different still - another thing we never saw. I've ended up ordering my boxed set through Border's book and music store and it's gonna cost $65. God damn. Sorry about all this, but I find it slightly annoying to say the least that you people talk about the album's shoddy treatment on the one hand, and on the other talk about seeing George on the big screen, free giveaway VHSs, plenty of Boxed sets on the shelf, radio/television/newspaper ads (however few you say they are - at least they exist in your part of the world). Literally nothing in Australia. Not nearly nothing. Literally not a god damned thing. Compared to the ads for Paul McCartney's non-existent concert that got shoved down our throat, it is sickening.
Update (1/15/03)
I just wanted to reply to Hey Jude's 1/11 Brainwashed comments regarding the VHS tape he was able to pick up at his local CD store... When Brainwashed was released, I saw it advertised on TV with an 800 number to call to place your order. It was a little slimy seeing it sold that way, but what the heck, I got to see a few seconds of George on the telly! Along with the price of the CD they were offering the VHS tape Hey Jude referred to. Maybe the overstocks were sent to CD stores? Just a thought! Thanks for your great updates on the site. I always look forward to them. Regards,
~Susan
Update (1/14/03)
It was always in the plan for Capitol to, after the initial run was depleted, issue Brainwashed in a standard jewel case. This, of course, makes the initial Digipak version a "limited edition," as well.
Update II (1/11/03)
At my local independent CD store, I noticed two interesting "Brainwashed" items. First, I noticed that the store had plenty copies of the "limited edition" black boxed set, as well as plenty of copies of the single stand-alone CD of "Brainwashed." However, it appears that Capitol is now issuing "Brainwashed" in a normal jewel case and not the digi-pack previously available on its own or in the boxed set. Otherwise, the artwork all seemed to be the same as the digi-pack version. Also, among the freebie promo items the store leaves by the door, they had a shrink-wrapped VHS copy of what is apparently the 7-minute EPK that has been released to the media and included on the DVD in the boxed set. However, unlike the rather obscure artwork found on the cardboard sleeve that holds the DVD in the boxed set, this promotional VHS copy has the "Brainwashed" album artwork on the front and top/sides. On the back, it includes a short explanation of the video. It's a bit odd that this text was included on the promotional VHS copies, but not on the DVD. I don't know if this VHS copy was simply a promotional thing for the record store to play in the store, or if this was offered as a giveaway at some stores. This store only had one copy, I didn't stop to ask if they had had more copies or if this was the only one. I went ahead and grabbed it, because, well, who wouldn't grab a free George video? I haven't taken the shrink wrap off to confirm the contents of the video, but I already have the DVD, so I think I'll leave the shrink wrap on. For those who are interested, here is the text found on the back of the videotape (the first few lines of which were also apparently included on the promo CD singles for "Stuck Inside a Cloud"): "During the final years of his life George Harrison was working on an album that is now about to be released, one year after his untimely death at the age of 58. Titled Brainwashed, the album is a powerful summary statement from one of the most important and influential musicians of our time. It captures the full range of his many moods -- from wry and acerbic to gentle and funny to dreamy and mystical. Best of all, it features plenty of his extraordinary guitar playing in all its expressive glory. On this Video, Harrison's son, Dhani, and Harrison's long-time collaborator Jeff Lynne describe the heartbreaking -- and, ultimately, heart-lifting -- process of completing Brainwashed as a tribute to a man they both loved. Their words convey their affection and dedication. And the album more than lives up to the hopes of everyone who, from his days in The Beatles to his years as a solo artist, was moved and inspired by the music of George Harrison."
Update (1/7/03)
Update (1/3/03)
Regarding the recent comments on sales and promotion of "Brainwashed": As Mr. Concannon says, there is a distinction between RIAA's gold certification process and Billboard's (SoundScan's) album charts. RIAA measures units shipped to retailers, Internet sellers, TV-driven sellers and the like. Billboard uses SoundScan to measure units actually sold by music retailers. "Brainwashed" has sold well over the Internet, more modestly via retailers. It is unclear whether Soundscan factors in Internet sales, but they probably do not (it's not a retail outlet). Therefore, Billboard's album charts may understate units of "Brainwashed" sold by ignoring in brisk Internet sales. Inclusion of Internet sales or not, sales are still disappointing. Given the quality of the album, the lackluster sales are likely linked to the dismal promotion effort by Capitol. The lack of promotion is inexplicable. A final studio album of new material by a Beatle would, one would think, warrant a big push at least comparable to "Back in the US." Instead, Olivia and Dhani were left to themselves to get the word out. One would think a few ads quoting superlative reviews are warranted even at this late date. If "Brainwashed" receives a Grammy nomination that might also garner attention. Or, how about Capitol sponsorship of network viewing of "The Concert for George" with attendant promotion of "Brainwashed?"
Update (1/1/03)
To give a different view on Mark Askren's 12/18 comments; I'm glad to hear Brainwashed is #15 at Harrod's & that the promo film is being shown on jets, but my experience has been different. Only a small percentage of record buyers are in jets even during the holiday season, and here in my Mid- west US city of 750,000 population (what the music biz would call a "secondary market") promo for Brainwashed has been invisible. I can't help but wonder if this hasn't been the case in most areas of the US since George's fine album is #97 in it's 5th week in Billboard. I have seen zero television ads for the album, and though there are 3 PBS stations in the area, I've never seen either the edit of the promo DVD aired on any of them, nor have I heard the promo-only 'Stuck Inside A Cloud' on the radio at all. There was a print ad for a local store showing 20-30 CDs,and Brainwashed was one, but not one of the big-picture "featured" CDs. Other than that, no print ads either. I'm also glad to see the report below that Brainwashed has gone gold (And I'd like to add that ATMP was certified 6 x Platinum on it's reissue in Feb. 2001). But the RIAA gives these awards based on the # of copies SHIPPED, not SOLD. For instance, Paul's Driving Rain CD went Gold (500,000 copies) in Mar.'02, but by the end of Nov.'02, Soundscan showed the CD had still SOLD less than 400,000 copies. As Brainwashed has had Billboard chart rankings of #18, #57, #63, #80 & #97; I doubt if the actual sales are more than 250,000- if that. Since 'Stuck Inside A Cloud" has been out for 2 months & hasn't set radio on fire, why hasn't another of the more radio-friendly tracks (Such as "Any Road...") been released & push- ed? Contrast this with Capitol's promo of Paul's Driving Rain. Within the first month of release, 2 retail (not promo) singles had been released, fol- lowed by a 6-song promo, then a couple of months later 2 more promo singles. Wherever the buck stops, it sadly seems George's final album is being allowed to do a fast fade, which I find perplexing, frustrating, and tasteless. As far as Paul being a more public figure, I think it comes down to him being a LIVING figure as I'm sure George would have promoted his 1st CD in 15 years- Olivia, Jeff Lynne, and most of all Dhani have done their bit as far as publicity goes. I fear the modest sales of Brain- washed may adversly affect the reissue/remastering of George's out-of-print albums, as well as the possible box set and a DVD of his videos. The subject of no promotion of Paul's Back In the US must also be a regional one. While Paul's said he didn't want to compete with George, some one did, as saturation TV ads for Back In the US were running here only 4 days after Brainwashed hit the stores --- 3 days BEFORE Back In... was released. I had also pre-ordered a cassette copy of Brainwashed, was told the store always got tape copies of "major releases", and expected for their copy & mine to arrive on release date. The store couldn't get the cassettes until 3 &1/2 weeks after release date. Brainwashed promoted? Maybe on the East & West Coasts, the "Primary Markets", but elsewhere it seems the great final album by a great artist has been shamefully ignored.

In the current editon of ROLLING STONE magazine, BRAINWASHED has debuted at no. 20 on the Rolling Stone album chart. RS has a brief commentary on BRAINWASHED with a photograph of George Harrison. RS noted that the debut at no. 20 was respectable with sales of 74,000. The current edition of RS also has a photograph of George Harrison on the cover, the photo from the White Album. In addition, the release of BRAINWASHED in November, 2002, is regarded by RS as a landmark/milestone/highlight event of 2002. Update (12/19/02)
Update (12/18/02) From Mark Askren:
Just my two cents, but since you've been posting people's complaints about a lack of promotion of George's new album, I thought I would add mine. I don't know what people are expecting when it comes to promoting George's Brainwashed. Hardly a day has gone by when I haven't seen the DVD promo on television, and I frequently see it in the new release section of stores (except discount stores like Target, which cater to the younger generation). In fact, I was just on a plane trip to London, where the DVD was played constantly on the airplane movie channels. The album was No. 15 at Harrod's two weeks ago. I haven't seen any promotion of Paul's Back in the U.S. Could this perception be that George's own dislike of the public spotlight has created the perception that his music isn't important, whereas Paul, who is constantly in the public eye, is an easily remembered figure?
Update (12/17/02)
In looking at the somewhat disappointing sales, the promo has been pretty bad--and even unintentionally misleading! I was in a Target store looking for the cd--based on the little blurb I saw on TV--it looked like a red cover with people or dummies sitting in chairs. I could not find the cd under the new release section.
I asked one of the employees who directed me back to the new release section and pointed to this black (can't even read the word Brainwashed unless you turn it a certain way!) cd. No promo that I saw showed a black cd--and not being able to read it REALLY hurts! I almost walked out of the store thinking they did not have it. I'm sure some folks have. Some promos would be helpful!!
Update (12/6/02)
Update (12/4/02)
The DVD that came with the Brainwashed special edition has been made available to PBS stations to use as filler. There are two versions, a 3:45 edit, and a 7:45 full version. You can view the versions of the filler at this address: http://www.fastfocus.tv/801.htm
Update (12/3/02)
Q.: You use to say that you don't know if this songs can change
one life, but that they changed yours,...what way?
[Dhani] The simple lose of dad or of a beloved person is already a
tremendous inner shock. Also, after I was working in this record so long waited by
professionals and for the public. For this ,also, it changed my life. I
wanted to control each one of their parts (sections) for becoming whole sure that
it would the record that my dad wanted before dying.
Q: What instructions (rules) did your dad brought about arrangements?
A: We were playing and recording together many times, and our first
working takes already showed a clear direction. A few times after his passing, I
went with the tapes to L.A. along with Jeff Lynne. My dad brought a list of
indications so precise: add a piano here, guitar there...all the snippets that were
unfinished we were trying to fill a way that they weren't noticed so much.
Q.:If you close your eyes,..which is the image of your dad that came to your mind? A.:(He closes his eyes) I remember him recording 'Rising Sun'. a so vivid memory. I'm in the studios along him and I heard him alone. I remember above all all the sights fulfilled with admiration of people, meanwhile he played and sang. All of this crowded my mind, along sounds and vibrations. It's like hearing a song that makes you to remember your girlfriend. In fact all of this record made me to think in my tender years, when dad and I played guitar together.
Q. If you needed to choose what is the preferred song from your dad?
A: One that he penned along eric clapton for the soundtrack of 'Lethal
Weapon.' It's called 'Cheer Down'. It's a phrase that reminds me the happy
conversations among my dad and my mum. When someone else is sad, it used
to be said 'Cheer up.' '' (Thanks to eufe for the translation of the text.)
Just to let you know that the Brainwashed site now says "In stores now, Read the Reviews Here." Click on that and a window pops up with a review from Mojo. Plus there is an audio interview with Jeff and Dhani.
Update (12/2/02)
Mike Sommer's numbers for George's chart history aren't exactly correct for Cloud Nine. The Harrison Alliance chronicled George's complete US chart history week by week from Wonderwall to Live in Japan, including The Traveling Wilburys and all the US singles in issues 95 and 96 (available as back issues, PLUG PLUG PLUG).
At that time Billboard had just started keeping track of CD sales, but had a separate CD chart for them. So while it is correct that Cloud Nine debuted at number 77 and peaked at number 8, that was for Vinyl LP and Cassette tapes ONLY. On the separate CD chart that Billboard had at that time, Cloud Nine debuted at number 15 and peaked at number 1!
Shortly thereafter, Billboard consolidated their album charts to reflect all the different formats.

Hi. In Germany George Harrison's "Brainwashed" debuted at #17. That's quite good.
Update (12/1/02)
Hi! As a huge Beatles fan, I visit your site every day (or try to!). The actual peak of George's Gone Troppo was # 108. The Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989 peaked at 132, while Live in Japan peaked at 126.
Granted, with the different way Billboard conducts its charts, the debuts are higher now (and the falls faster), but Brainwashed is George's highest debuting album since Living in the Material World debuted at # 11 in 1973. Here are the US Billboard debuts and peaks of all of George's albums:
- Wonderwall Music Debut 197, peak 49
- Electronic Sounds Debut 192; peak 191
- All Things Must Pass Debut 5; peak 1
- The Concert For Bangla Desh Debut 14; peak 2
- Living in the Material World Debut 11; peak 1
- Dark Horse Debut 58; peak 4
- Extra Texture (Read All About It) Debut 34; peak 8
- Best of George Harrison Debut 67; peak 31
- Thirty Three and 1/3 Debut 69; peak 11
- George Harrison Debut 28; peak 14
- Somewhere in England Debut 33; peak 11
- Gone Troppo Debut 119; peak 108
- Cloud Nine Debut 77; peak 8
- Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 Debut 57; peak 3
- The Best of Dark Horse Debut and Peak 132;
- Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 (a nice joke--no Vol.2...this is the 2nd and last album) Debut 40; peak 11
- Live in Japan Debut and Peak 126
and
- Brainwashed Debut 18......peak hopefully MUCH higher!
Update II (11/30/02)
Since you're reporting on "Brainwashed" chart debuts, I though I should mention that it debuted at #9 in Norway. Not too bad! Though we all naturally always hope for the highest possible charting for our heroes.
Update (11/30/02)
"Brainwashed" does have a higher debut than probably all of his albums, but that is because Billboard -- only since 1991 -- now uses the Sound Scan system of tracking sales. Albums tend to debut higher and then fall sharply (I hope Brainwashed hangs in there during the holidays, at least). Before that, it was a different system that I'm not really clear on. But since "Extra Texture" charted at No. 8 in 1975, his chart history is as follows: "33 1/3," No. 11; "George Harrison," No. 14; "Somewhere in England," No. 11; "Gone Troppo," around No. 100; and "Cloud Nine," No. 8. (Again, those were not debuts, but peaks)
Also, Carl Savich was incorrect about his note that "ATMP (2000)" did not make the Top 200. It was not a "new" title, but a re-issue, and did enter at No. 4 on Billboard's Pop Catalog chart. In fact, it did quite well altogether, totalling about 18 weeks on that chart (combining two chart runs: time of release; after George's death) and I have seen some reports that the re-issue has sold more than 300,000 copies in the U.S. alone, which is pretty significant. Have any of the other solo Beatle reissues entered the catalog chart? (I don't think so.)
As for the debut of "Brainwashed," I had mixed feelings. I guess I am disappointed it didn't sell 150,000 or 200,000 copies, but let's be thankful (on Thanksgiving!) that we have a wonderful album to cherish. And Top 20 is respectable. Whether or not the masses snap it up probably isn't something George cared about anyway! I also am miffed that Capitol/Paul released the live album and DVD the week of the annivesary of George's death; it would have been appropriate (and better sales-wise) to have released "Brainwashed" on Nov. 26, the week of the anniversary, and pushed McCartney to Dec. 3. (Of course, Macca is as stubborn as they come, and he calls the shots with Capitol.) (Editor's note: According to a recent McCartney interview, both albums were scheduled for the same week and Capitol moved George's to an earlier date.)
And come on Capitol, do more promos! (Note, I know of at least one radio station doing a Harrison promotion this weekend, so maybe others around the country are doing the same; it can't hurt.)
Update (11/29/02)
BRAINWASHED by George Harrison has debuted at no.3 on the Billboard Internet Sales Chart. BRAINWASHED is at no.18 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
No.18 for BRAINWASHED is actually pretty good. It may be the best showing for a Harrison solo album in several decades. ATMP (2000)didn't even chart on the Top 200 I believe! Plus, none of George's back catalogue is selling. So I think, all things considered, it is a very good showing. I agree with you that there was NO promotion at all. No attempt to try to sell it to a new audience, etc. No.18 is not bad at all though. It is respectable.
Update (11/28/02) Billboard.com (see second paragraph from the bottom) reports that "Brainwashed" bowed into the charts at a disappointing no. 18, selling a mere 74,000 copies (OK, who didn't buy more than one?). Certainly, with all the anticipation among us Beatle fans, we'd have thought it would have debuted higher. But apparently we were the only ones with the anticipation. There was surprisingly little promotion. A few newspaper interviews, and Olivia's NBC interview, were about all that was done. Too bad. It's gotten almost universally good reviews and we hope it gets consideration when Grammy time comes around. It'll be interesting to see where the McCartney album debuts.
And speaking of Olivia's interview, you sure wouldn't know she was the featured attraction if you compare how much she talked versus Katie Couric. Oh well: Olivia showed just how much of a class act she is -- and why she and George were a perfect match.
Update (11/27/02) We watched Katie Couric's interview with Olivia and realized how much she and George were alike. Olivia gave little for Couric to use, but communicated what she had to: that George's perspective on the Beatles was that "he used to be in a band" and that he faced death with dignity. Actually, there was a lot more of Couric in the interview than Olivia. For that, we think George would have been proud.
Update II (11/26/02) In an interview with the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Paul McCartney says he originally planned to release his album the same day as George's, but Capitol moved "Brainwashed" up to avoid the conflict. "Originally I was disappointed to hear that George's album as coming out the same day as ours. I didn't like that idea. It looks like I'm trying to compete with George; it obviously wouldn't look like he's trying to compete with me. So it put me in sort of an awkward position. I don't know if it's 'cause I mentioned it to [Capitol Records] but they moved [his release date]." (Thanks to Mike McGrath.)
Update (11/26/02)
I detected allusions to "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Within You Without You", and "Come Together" on BRAINWASHED. "Never Get Over You" also has Beatles allusions such as the phrase "girl" and "ooooh" ("Girl", "Eight Days a Week", "Got to Get You into My Life"). "Never Get Over You" is my favorite track on the CD and should have been the single. It has a winsome quality of euphoria to it that encompasses George Harrison's entire career in music. It tries to recapture the sense of wonder and joy of newfound love as expressed in the early Beatles singles one last time. It is a great love song/ballad akin to "Something".
"Brainwashed" has allusions to Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35". The allusion everyone has missed is in the song "Rocking Chair in Hawaii". That song quotes from Hank Williams' 1950 record "Long Gone Lonesome Blues". How many people knew that George Harrison was a Hank Williams fan? How many people knew that Harrison listened to country and western music? The Rolling Stones made an allusion in "Honky Tonk Women" to Hank Williams' record "Honky Tonk Blues".
"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" is written by Harold Arlen who wrote "Over the Rainbow" in the WIZARD OF OZ. George Harrison showed the depth and scope of his musical influences on BRAINWASHED. From Harold Arlen to Hank Williams to Bob Dylan to The Beatles and to his own solo work. BRAINWASHED is a great coda to a remarkable musical career.
Add my name to the list of disatisfied Canadians. I didn't get a pick.
Update (11/25/02)
I just wanted to pass along the disappointing news that "Brainwashed" only debuted this week at #52 on the British album charts. It was also only the thirteenth highest charting new album of the week : http://www.dotmusic.com/charts/top75albums2.asp . Thanks, and keep up the excellent work.
I was just reading your note about the reference to "Within You..." on Marwa Blues. Isn't there also an allusion to the swordmandel (sp.?) part from "Strawberry Fields" on the same song? Also, someone else might have mentioned it, but George also spits "shoot me" ala "Come Together" on "Pisces Fish".
Thanks for all your great work on the website,
